The Planet
August 1960. Director Nikolai Berentsev is working on a large-scale science fiction film about an expedition to Venus. Construction of the enormous sets begins on the soundstage. Berentsev himself designs models of the planets and the spacecraft, inventing special equipment for composite filming. He attempts to imagine and visualize something no one has ever seen before—life on other planets. He believes that imagination should outpace science, but he faces skepticism from his colleagues and the scientific community. Ultimately, he himself begins to doubt whether audiences need his film, and the point of these dreams of space when there are so many unsolved problems on Earth.
